Degrees and Certificates Awarded

The Degrees and Certificates Awarded reports contain information about the number of degrees and certificates awarded starting in 2002-03. Awards are displayed for each campus, college, and major. Degrees and certificates awarded are also displayed by Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) code.

  • Degrees/certificates awarded are from July 1 to June 30 of the following year.
Glossary

IPEDS definitions used in the “Peer Comparisons” dashboard are available in the IPEDS glossary.

Data Year
For reporting purposes, the window of time beginning July 1st of a year through June 30th of the following year, e.g., July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 (or 2020-2021). Any degrees, certificates, or other recognized postsecondary credentials conferred within that window are included.

Award level
The roll up of various degrees and certificates into shortened descriptions of one of seven categories for reporting: Prebaccalaureate Certificate, Postbaccalaureate Certificate, Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, Doctoral/Professional Practice Degree, and Doctoral Research/Scholarship Degree.

Award type
The type of award (degree or certificate) granted to a student.

Campus
The University of Minnesota locations at Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester, Twin Cities and the entities that report to them.

CIP Category
The description corresponds with the 2 digit CIP code, i.e., the first 2 digits of a given CIP Code.

Classification of Instructional Programs Code (CIP Code)
This code allows accurate tracking, assessment, and reporting of fields of study and program completions activity.

CIP Subcategory
The description corresponds with the 4 digit CIP code, i.e., the first 4 digits of a given CIP Code.

College
A unit of the University of Minnesota, offering courses of instruction, usually leading to a degree, that furthers the University’s teaching, research, and outreach mission.

Gender (IPEDS)
The official university reporting to IPEDS, counted from the university’s Legal Sex field, but only allows values of Male and Female.

Major
Major (Declared Degree): A student’s academic plan(s) that carries a degree designator. For students who are pursuing degrees, this represents their 'main' course(s) of study.

Race/ethnicity group (IPEDS)
An aggregation of the IPEDS definition of race and ethnicity. A person’s race/ethnicity for official IPEDS reporting is based on a set of criteria in order to report a single value for each individual, separating those with “Alien” or “Alien Temporary” citizenship status and those with multiple ethnicities into separate categories.  In aggregate format, “BIPOC” includes the following race and ethnicity categories: American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and Two or more races.

UMN Peer Group
University of Minnesota campuses, external public/not for profit universities, and BIG10 affiliated universities make up the University’s Peer Group.

Underrepresented (Ethnicity)
Students who identify as United States citizens and identify as one of the following: American Indian/Alaskan Native, Hispanic/Latino, Black/African American, or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander.
